Imagine a world without music, at first you may say "yes of course I can" and then think long and hard about where you hear music.

Imagine a world without music, at first you may say “yes of course I can” and then think long and hard about where you hear music. You pick it up in films, TV ads, shopping malls, at work, basically just about everywhere; I bet that you do not go a whole day without hearing music somewhere or singing a tune out loud to yourself or in your head.

Music is incredible when you think about where it has come from and what it is like today. There are millions of songs all over the world in different countries producing different backing tracks and lyrics, it is unbelievable how songs can sound so different to each other after all the years of them being produced.

The first ever signs of music were back in pre-historic days around 1500 BC and it has been developing all the time since then. The modern and contemporary style of music that we all know and love today was introduced in the 1900s but in the 100 years plus it has been around it has changed dramatically. When you first think of modern you think of the pop stars that you love today however modern back in the early 1900′s was carrying out a new style of classical music. Classical music is where all music originated from and although not many people favour it today, we have a lot to thank its development for.

Music today transcends into your everyday life, when you are on a ghost train at a fairground you are bound to hear a spooky piece of music which will build up as you approach the scariest part, without the music playing on your mind as to when something is going to happen your experience would not be as scary or in a weird way enjoyable! Films always have pieces of music in the background throughout to fit what the characters are feeling at the time and there are even TV shows and films which fit into the genre of musicals. Musicals feature songs more often than regular films and also characters sing instead of speaking in parts. When you go about your day after reading this, you are bound to notice just how much you hear music than you realised.

Learning about music in school is very instrument based and of course you will already have a head start if you are learning how to play one or are able to sing. To be able to progress from key stage 3 to do GCSE music you must be at a certain level of your chosen instrument or singing otherwise you cannot progress, but of course can enjoy learning about it in key stage 3.

You will start off in Year 7 learning what the different music symbols mean such as quavers and semi quavers and will also be taught a basic tune on the keyboard to learn. You will then learn about the different eras of music and who the major composers were at the time; if you enjoy history then you will also enjoy this part of the subject. In Year 9 you can get the opportunity at creating your own tune on the computer and carry out a musical performance with a variety of instruments. Whether you can play or not you should enjoy having a break from the text book, learning in a music lesson.

The origin of country music can be traced back as far as the 1920′s. Many people especially those from outside the USA often think that it is a new music genre due to the rise of young country singers and groups such as Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum who brought the genre back to life and introduced it to the world once again. For those who are interested in the history of music and its many different genres, they should also be interested in finding out the history of country music. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular music genres in the USA today. It is even popular outside the USA such as in Canada and Australia, as numerous American country singers and musicians today have also gained fame outside of their home country.

One of the most popular sub-genre of country music in the 1930s and 1940s was honky tonk. It was usually identified by the heavy use of guitar, bass, drums, and steel guitar. In those days, the most famous and probably the best country music “hero” was Al Dexter, an American musician and song writer who came up with the name “honky tonk”. His first hit song was “Honky Tonk Blues”. “Pistol Packin’ Mama”, another one of Dexter’s many hits, was used as the marching chorus of the New York Yankees in the year 1943. Ernest Tubb, also known as the Texas Troubadour, was also considered a pioneer of the sub-genre. In fact, the rise of honky tonk was by his biggest hit, “Walking the Floor Over You”, released in 1941.

Another popular country sub-genre at that time was Western music. Western songs were usually about the ups and downs of the everyday cowboy life. The style was popularized by the likes of Sons of the Pioneers and Gene Autry, and it was identified by the use of string instruments (such as the fiddle and double bass) and harmonica.

As the genre progressed throughout the decades, more sub-genres were created, such as country soul, rockabilly, and alternative country. Today, country music incorporates bits and pieces of other music genres so it is no wonder that it sounds so much different from what it used to be back in the old days. By studying its brief history, people will be able to appreciate this genre even more as it has inspired so many great musicians today to produce the best music people listen to, love, enjoy, and adore.

There are several things that music does for people. I believe good music evokes true emotion. Whether that emotion is joy, sorrow, love, hurt or praise, the audience will connect to a pure form of the art. In order to produce good music one must study the craft of music. Some of the top music innovators have either studied music in college, a conservatory or hands on experience. Each method works well for a certain group of people. Having a music degree affords you the opportunity to do a lot in the music field that will lead to a rewarding career.

One of the most popular music jobs has to be a professional singer or musician. You see them in the headlines in bright lights and wondering what would your life be like in their shoes. Being a musical celebrity it’s a daunting task. Musical performers are always on even when the lights are off. Singers and musicians spend a lot of time rehearsing their craft to give the best musical performance ever. It’s always about getting better. When you think of a musician you think behind the scenes. Well, that’s true to a certain extinct. Singers and musicians complement each other. When the two are in complete harmony its magic. Professional singers and musicians can work anywhere from singing and playing at sold out stadiums for concerts or a local lounge doing musical shows. These artists tend to go out on tours to promote their music. For the musician, once they record the music it’s on to the next project for them. The singer must find new ways to remain relevant after the music slows shows slow down.

Another known job in music is the traditional grade school music teacher. These teachers take us starting in elementary school and begin the process to shape and form our voices. Then once you move to intermediate and high school you will see the stakes become a little tougher. As students you will begin to compete in different voice competition around the city/state and national level in some cases. Typically, the music instructor will be one who teaches in the classroom setting. The curriculum is all based on what the school district has in place. This musical instructor can also be over the music department for the entire school. So, the school’s band, musical productions are all done by this person with the assistance of other faculty. Becoming a vocal coach often falls in the category of teaching with a wider scope of students.

Becoming a musical conductor for a church has been a field for more musician and vocal performers. Churches are always a good place to not only work but use the skills that you learned in college. More and more churches are using more technical methods in their singing. They use the traditional sheet music and vocal techniques that are often taught in school. With the choir competitions popping up all over the place technique is important. Of course, there are not always trained singers and musicians that you will work with, but it gives you the chance to use your skills set.

Experimental music to me can be anything from something slightly apart from the predictable to music that may not even resemble music at all. And there are many creative music makers that describe themselves quite happily as being experimental. While others object to the term, claiming it is too broad and actually undermines the musical product they have created.

Experimental tends to be a label that is put on artists that stray from the norms in music. Perhaps their musical style does not follow the familiar formulas that make up a particular genre such as jazz or pop music. Perhaps the structure of their pop song does not follow the normal verse chorus and bridge structure. As a music and spoken word artist, a chorus may not even occur in one of my songs. So my music feels right to be classified as experimental. And as I am not interested in duplicating what has already been done, this feels suitable for me as well as fitting for my artistic approach and intentions.

But I do know of composers and performers of what would be considered as more creative music who do not like this term. Perhaps rightly, they feel it is just too broad and does not really define what they are doing. Also, deriving from the word experiment, it implies that their music is somehow unfinished or incomplete. The term experimental music here is understood more literally as the music being described as an experiment. Hence insinuating that the musical outcome is merely the product of some exploration and trying something out, rather than grounded in musical knowledge, craft and creativity. So experimental here is almost a derogatory term to describe music that has not arrived yet, it is still becoming. Again, I do not really have a problem with this description or interpretation and would champion the role of a few musicians to try to explore and discover new musical ground and voices. It is however understandable that some creative music makers may find this judgement patronising and critical of their music.

Ultimately, like with any label, category or genre classification the term experimental music is somewhat vague and perhaps even misleading. A lot of very popular and accessible music can entail very experimental elements and approaches. One only has to look at the Beatles for evidence of this. But one does have to define one’s creative music approach and style and for me experimental feels appropriate, honest and hopefully intriguing.

I have witnessed countless occurrences during my teaching career where teachers upon trying to explain music without sufficient demonstration have left students bemused and at worst alienated. This is a disaster, as music theory really isn’t that complicated, and if you have only a limited experience of playing a musical instrument can be easily understood when put in relation to the things that you are able to play.

It is in everyone’s best interested to apply everything to an instrument, in particular the piano, where the whole spectrum of music is laid out before everyone’s eyes and at everyone’s fingertips. From there it can easily be translated to selected instruments.

Any attempts to explain music theory without this are, in my opinion, flawed. The intervals in a scale, for instance, can be visualized clearly when one plays a C major scale on the piano. From that scale, made more effective as a demonstration by the fact that there are no flats or sharps, the student can see why there is a semi tone between the 3rd and 4th degrees and the 7th and 8th degrees. It can then be implied form this that the same applies to other scales, such as G major, which can in turn explain why there is an F# and thus how key signatures work.

All of these notions are incredibly simple, but completely baffling and abstract when not explained in relation to how they are played. I suffered bitter experience of not being able to grasp these things at school, as my music teacher and music theory teacher (I had separate classes) failed to explain these basic and fundamental concepts in relation to my chosen instruments. I was fortunate to come fro a very musical family and certainly had a natural affinity to playing music, so these things weren’t hindrances, they were merely a part of a separate world far from what I considered to be at the time, my own unique understanding of music.

The problem I see often which is regrettable is that this goes on and causes students much displeasure when attempting to achieve music GCSE. Yet it is one that I always strive to rectify, simply by explaining very slowly and precisely how crotchets and quavers work, simply by tapping them out and counting and encouraging students to do the same. It is a gradual process of recognition that can take time in order for it to become apparent how it relates to piano or guitar. But it certainly happens more quickly when instruments are used rather than by throwing out abstract terminology and expecting students to grasp what by the sounds of it are obscure concepts.

The world loves music.

The world loves music. The soul of video games and films lies in music. Today, several websites and a number of other applications in industries, such as corporate, retail, radio and restaurant, music is widely used to both entertain and retain customers or clients. This is where royalty free music comes into picture. Many people are still not aware of this term and those who are, are taking full advantage of it in their productions. This type of music is especially for people looking for inexpensive music.

If you are a serious professional then royalty free music is your best bet not only because it is affordable but also for it is high in value and quality. The provider of this type of music requires you to pay one time fee and gives you the rights to use the purchased tracks innumerable times. This means that there is no need to pay royalties for using it again. In this sense, such music is rightly termed as royalty free. This type of music is basically used to lend background score to films, videos on the Internet, and video games.

The benefits of using music that is royalty free are immense. The biggest of these is that you do not have to worry about creating music or pay huge sums of money to renowned composers and artists. All you need to do is get the royalty free music license for once. In case of other music licenses you may have to pay a fee every time you use a particular piece of music. To add to their side effects the amount of fee gets proportionately increased if you plan to broadcast that music or show it to more people. However, in case of music that is free of royalty payment, you can offer the purchased piece of music to a large audience as well without any additional fee.

The World Wide Web is overwhelmed with a huge number of free music sites. However, the music offered at these sites is usually very low in quality. Also, such websites do not have enough stock to offer you good variety to choose from. This limits your options. These also may not allow you to use the music they way you would wish to. They may even have copied tracks that may eventually land the users into copyright infringement troubles. So, it is important that you only get royalty free music from authentic websites that offer only high quality music and have certain policies to follow.

Although, the quality of music that is royalty free was considered doubtful by many people years ago, the popularity of this type of music in only surging with time. Today, you can find truly outstanding compositions online in a wide array of genres and moods. It is advised that you audition a track before finalizing it or add it to your wish list to take a final call on it. This will allow you to choose only the best fit track for your production.

Irish music has fused with a variety of different musical genres. Irish songs have a hint of rock, American country, pop, etc. These combinations have created a variety of popular Irish sub-genres. Irish songs have always had a unique and distinct melody that many people love. Now that it has been fused with popular genres, Irish music has soared in popularity. These fusions allow for Irish songs to be more popular. Irish songs have always had many fans, but now more people can enjoy traditional Irish music with a twist. This new combination has allowed a new area of exploration for the artists through the Irish songs.
One popular mix of Irish songs is rock and Irish music. Many artists such as U2 and The Script include rock and Irish music into their songs. They are wildly popular, and have incorporated both traditional and new age music. Drop Kick Murphys is one example of a popular band with a tone of Irish song along with a popular hard rock edge. One of their more popular songs “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” exemplifies their Irish incorporation with their melody. The beginning of the song goes on with an Irish song’s rhythm before breaking into a hard rock song. Irish songs will always hold traditional value, but new incorporations will keep them popular for many years. Irish songs are timeless, and hold great value.
Another example of Irish songs that have been fused with hard rock is Flogging Molly. Their songs have traditional Irish song undertones. They also have a hard rock tone to their music. The strong following shows how extremely popular these bands are. People love the traditional music and mix with hard rock. These fans have a love for both Irish songs and the feelings they invoke. The Irish songs that these bands model their songs after have been popular for centuries in both Ireland and beyond. It is no surprise that these songs are still just as popular.
Another interesting combination with Irish songs, is with American Country music. This would seem an unlikely duo, but has become popular in many aspects. The mixture has melded two cultures together into one musical genre. There have been a few notable musicians that have become famous with these country Irish songs. One of them is Daniel O’Donnell, as he has the most recent recordings from this genre.

These Irish songs are popular in specific music circles, but do have a good standing among musical sub-genres. Irish songs will continue to fuse with more genres to create new areas of music.
There are a variety of other sub-genres of Irish songs that people enjoy listening to. Among these genres, people have popularized traditional Irish songs by infusing them with mainstream music.

This comes as no surprise, because of the reliable fan base and traditional Irish songs that have been popular for centuries. It is a wonderful thing to bring back to life the traditional Irish songs that have encompassed Irish culture for many years.

Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You’d think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band.
In a neat little town they call Belfast
Apprenticed to trade I was bound
And many an hour’s sweet happiness
I spent in that neat little town.
Till bad misfortune came o’er me
That caused me to stray from the land
Far away from my friends and relations
To follow the black velvet band.

Well, I was out strolling one evening
Not meaning to go very far
When I met with a pretty young damsel
Who was selling her trade in the bar.
When I watched, she took from a customer
And slipped it right into my hand
Then the Watch came and put me in prison
Bad luck to the black velvet band.

Next morning before judge and jury
For a trial I had to appear
And the judge, he said, “You young fellows…
The case against you is quite clear
And seven long years is your sentence
You’re going to Van Dieman’s Land
Far away from your friends and relations
To follow the black velvet band.”

So come all you jolly young fellows
I’d have you take warning by me
Whenever you’re out on the liquor, me lads,
Beware of the pretty colleen.
She’ll fill you with whiskey and porter
Until you’re not able to stand
And the very next thing that you’ll know, me lads,
You’re landed in Van Dieman’s Land.

Come all ye maidens young and fair
And you that are blooming in your prime
Always beware and keep your garden fair
Let no man steal away your thyme

Chorus: For thyme it is a precious thing
And thyme brings all things to my mind
nlyme with all its flavours, along with all its joys
Thyme, brings all things to my mind

Once I and a bunch of thyme
i thought it never would decay
Then came a lusty sailor
Who chanced to pass my way
And stole my bunch of thyme away
Chorus

The sailor gave to me a rose
A rose that never would decay
He gave it to me to keep me reminded
Of when he stole my thyme away
Chorus
